MMLT- Montessori Methodology in Language Training
Language teachers often face the same problems, above all with adults (or university students over 20), such as refusal to learn new languages and trainees early desertion of their training course, often due to the lack of time. Moreover, learning a language is much more difficult for an adult than for a youth. This is mainly due to an obsolete approach of languages, often too standardised, which does not take into consideration the adults’ psychological blocks and individual learning times. The project aims to deal with this problem by transferring the Montessori educational method, which has been proved very efficient and successful with children under 16 and deals very effectively with the personalization of the educational methods and the consideration of the groups of learners, to the language learning of adults over 20. The project will develop a manual for the transfer of the Montessori method to language learning for adults and university students. In this manual the Montessori method will be adapted in order to fit the needs of language learning. The manual will be available in all the partners' languages (Greek, Italian, English, Romanian, Hungarian, Polish). On the basis of this manual, the project will organise workshops and e-learning courses in order to train language teachers all over Europe to use the Montessori method when delivering their language courses. The training of the teachers will include the practical implementation of the method in language learners. The project is expected to have a significant impact in many fields: it will produce a new innovative methodology to teach foreign languages to adults, it will enrich trainers’ curriculum with a distinctive and modern updating, it will facilitate trainers’ exchange of good practices, using a common method and will enhance trainees’ motivation in reaching their goal (learning a foreign language) more successfully.
The main aim of the project is to define a method for language teaching based on the concept of the Montessori’s methodology which will be adaptive, easy to implement, accepted as an intuitive, practical and easy way for people of any age to understand and learn languages. This method would address the needs of learners in different educational and training sectors and combine traditional face-to-face workshops with e-learning and ICT based learning. We want to transfer the Montessori Method to the field of language learning for adults and university students in order to promote the acquisition of key competencies throughout the education and training system.
A main objective of the project is also to equip the language teachers with an innovative but also sound pedagogical method in order to develop their skills and acquire new competences. This will not only allow them to offer language courses to a more extended target group and to learners in different educational and training sectors but also to increase their employability. On the other hand, the learners will be able to be trained on the basis of a sound methodology that will take into account their individual training needs.
The language teachers who will be trained will have the chance to experience themselves the Montessori approach in their own training.
Partners will work in the following ways:
1) Development of a Manual for the transfer of the Montessori Method in language learning. The manual will be primarily addressed to language teachers and will describe analytically how to implement the principles of the Montessori Method to adults over 20.
2) Organization of training workshops for language teachers in the methodology.
3) Development of online training for the language teachers all over Europe in the methodology.
4) Evaluation procedures of the face to face and the online training will be based on the Montessori Method too (self assessment, portfolios).
